This video examines the tragic air crash and the subsequent investigation of the Charkhi Dadri Mid Air Collision. We'll analyze the factors that led to this devastating plane crash, exploring the critical moments of the mid-air collision.

On the evening of 12 November 1996, Saudi Flight 763 took off from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi Airport toward Dhahran, while Kazakhstan Flight 1907 was descending for arrival on the same airway. Both flights were under the control of the same approach controller.

We walk you through the timeline, how ATC cleared the Kazakh crew to descend to 15,000 ft while the Saudia plane was held at 14,000 ft, how radio transmissions and replies became confused, and how, crucially, the Kazakh crew descended below their assigned level. We include verbatim CVR transcripts and radar (or lack thereof) data to trace step by step how the two aircraft came into conflict.

Next, we investigate the investigation by India’s Lahoti Commission, the failure of the Kazakh crew to maintain clearance altitude, compounded by communication misunderstandings, overreliance on their radio operator (who lacked independent flight instrumentation), and the absence of secondary radar and collision-avoidance systems and TCAS in the Delhi airspace.

Finally, we reflect on the lessons learned, how airspace design, separation corridors, radar upgrades, and the mandatory adoption of TCAS (Traffic Collision Avoidance System) in India came as direct outcomes, and why even the safest airlines must guard vigilantly against human, procedural, and technical vulnerabilities.
