When you look at a world map, you probably don’t realize just how massive Africa truly is. For centuries, cartographers used the Mercator Projection map, a design created by Gerardus Mercator in 1569, that stretched some countries while shrinking others. On that map, Africa looks smaller than Europe, North America, and even Greenland. But here’s the truth:
Africa is the second-largest continent in the world, covering more than 30 million square kilometers.
You can fit the United States, China, India, Japan, and most of Europe, all together, nside Africa’s borders, with room to spare!
This continent is not just big in size, but also in history, culture, resources, and influence.
The “True Size of Africa” is a reminder that maps don’t just show geographyt, they shape how we see the world. For too long, Africa has been minimized on paper, and in perception. But the reality is undeniable: Africa is vast, powerful, and central to our global story.
In this video, I break down the history of the Mercator map, why Africa has been misrepresented, and what the true scale of Africa means for how we understand its role in the past, present, and future.
From the Ashanti Kingdom of Ghana to the pyramids of Egypt, from the rich gold of Mali under Mansa Musa to the modern cities of Accra, Lagos, Nairobi, and Johannesburg, Africa is a giant, both in land and in legacy.
Whether you’re African, African American, Caribbean, or part of the global diaspora, this is a chance to see the continent as it truly is: bigger, stronger, and more connected than we’ve been taught.
