(12 Feb 2019) Jury deliberations resumed Tuesday at the U.S. trial of notorious Mexican drug kingpin Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman.
This is the sixth day of deliberations, after the jury went home Monday without reaching a verdict.
AP reporter Claudia Torrens has been covering the trial since it started. She says Guzman again appeared upbeat Monday when making a brief appearance in court.
He smiled as he shook hands with his lawyers and waved to his wife, who was in her usual spot in the gallery, sporting a bright yellow blazer.
The jury in federal court in Brooklyn was silent for most of the day Monday before sending two notes to the judge. One asked to review law enforcement testimony about seizures of Colombian cocaine being shipped to the Sinaloa cartel to fuel a smuggling empire prosecutors say was under Guzman's command.
The other note asked if jurors have to be unanimous on whether the government has proven several elements of the case's top conspiracy count to reach a verdict on that count. They've been instructed that they need full agreement on at last three of those elements.
The second note was the first whiff of disagreement in the jury room. Most signs have pointed to jurors taking a methodical approach to reaching verdicts on 10 separate counts after hearing trial testimony that lasted nearly three months.
Guzman, 61, was extradited to the U.S. in 2017 for the trial, which could end in a life sentence. The defense has accused prosecution cooperators of making him a scapegoat for their own crimes.
