Ensure you have any multiple of 4 + 3 sts on each side of your square, not counting the corner chains.
The rosebud Granny sq has a total of 31 sts on each side. Don't worry if your squares have different numbers of stitches this pattern is very forgiving and you can always skip fewer stitches. The most important thing is to make sure you always have the same number of ch loops on each side for this pattern to work out well.
