North Somerset Railway Summer Diesel Gala - 1.8.2024

The second, and by far the biggest, gala event held by the North Somerset Railway is their Summer Diesel Gala, from the 1st to the 4th of August 2024. With a 4-train timetable and mainline shuttles to Westbury returning from the Steam Gala, this was set to be a massive undertaking. The event had a heavy 1990s-early 2000s theme, with engines, liveries and rolling stock from the period. Home fleet locomotives in action were Class 31 No. 31556, Class 33 No. 33030, Class 37 No. 37114 'City of Worcester', Class 47 No. D1926 and Class 56 No. 56074. Joining them were visiting Class 55 No. D9000 'Royal Scots Grey' and Class 87 No. 87002 'Royal Sovereign from Locomotive Services Limited, along with a short set of InterCity Swallow livery Mk3 stock, to simulate West Coast Main Line trains being hauled over unelectrified lines, and Class 67 No. 67006 'Royal Sovereign' from DB Cargo, which were being delivered new from Spain from 1999 to 2000. A short 2+5 HST set from the Esthwaite Branch Preservation Society would operate the mainline trips between Frome and Westbury, with power cars No. 43193 and 43197. The set wears the short lived Great Western Trains 'Merlin' livery typical of the time. All footage was captured on Thursday 1st August.
