They said the doors were locked to keep evil out.
But for the children inside, the evil was already kneeling at the altar.

In a remote mountain village, a crumbling Orthodox boarding house doubled as a religious refuge for “troubled” children—orphans, runaways, kids no one came back for. Officially, it was a place of prayer and discipline. Unofficially, it was sealed off from the outside world.

Former residents would later describe days that began before sunrise. Cold stone floors. Mandatory fasting. Confessions that lasted for hours. Any hesitation was called possession. Any protest was called sin.

Punishments were framed as purification. Isolation rooms with no windows. Forced kneeling on salt. Public shaming during prayer, where adults encouraged children to denounce each other. The priests kept records—but not of abuse. Of obedience.

What finally broke the silence wasn’t a confession.
It was a fire.

In February 2002, smoke poured from the east wing. Firefighters found locked dormitories. By the time the doors were forced open, several children were already dead—not from flames, but from neglect and restraint.

The Church denied everything. Local police delayed the investigation. Files disappeared. Witnesses recanted. Only years later did fragments of testimony surface—whispered stories of systematic abuse hidden behind scripture, authority, and fear.

No one was ever fully held accountable.

The building still stands.
Locals say the bells ring sometimes—
even though the church was abandoned decades ago.

And no one goes inside anymore.

Because some places don’t need demons.
They just need permission.
