Описание к видео Rose v. Giamatti (1989) Overview | LSData Case Brief Video Summary

Pete Rose sued Major League Baseball, Commissioner Giamatti, and the Cincinnati Reds to prevent a disciplinary hearing about allegations of him betting on baseball games. The case was transferred to federal court, and the issue at hand was diversity jurisdiction. The defendants argued that Major League Baseball was not a juridical entity, but the court concluded that the controversy was between Rose and Giamatti, and the joinder of the twenty-six clubs did not defeat the required diversity of citizenship. The court needed to determine if there was a conflict of interest between Rose and Giamatti. The Commissioner of Baseball has extensive power to investigate suspected actions not in the best interest of baseball, and the Reds cannot interfere with proceedings within the Commissioner's jurisdiction.
