SUFI DANCE
BY CLAUDIA HEINLE

SUFI DANCE is a short film clip created by Claudia Heinle, dancer and choreographer at CIE TANZ RAUM, to share material gathered during research trips in Egypt. These research trips are essential and stimulating for the dance company`s creations and are the basis for the teaching. To share some of these extraordinary moments with you means a lot to us.

In this clip, you can get a glimpse of Egypt’s Naqshbandi Sufis and their extraordinary dance and breathing techniques. To this day, Sufi orders in Egypt practice diverse SUFI DANCES to reach union with God. The Sufi communities are at times exclusively female, exclusively male or mixed. Rhythm, music, song, breath, and dance are an essential part of their spirituality. The movements are organic, repetitive, and at times very complex. They strengthen the centre, align, and promote a fluid spine. The Sufis use trance-inducing rhythm and movement to open their hearts and to experience a feeling of oneness.
