This video presents a typical workflow for synthetic organic laboratory experiments. Experiments often begin with an inventory of supplies followed by a complete review of the procedure. The next step is to dispense the reagents and actually being the reaction. Many reactions must be monitored for completion, often by TLC analysis of the reaction mixture. Once the reaction is stopped, the product must be isolated. This step frequently requires a work-up stage with a liquid-liquid extraction. If necessary, the crude product will be purified through either a distillation, recrystallization, or column chromatography. Finally, the product will be characterized. In all steps, safety is of critical importance.
