Swimbait Review: Phoney Frogs USA Heavyweight Gill Glide and Wake
Have some of the hot new baits from The Gathering 3, the Heavyweight Glide and Wake from Phoney. These baits are large profile gills, coming in at approx 7.5" and 5.25 oz of resin. The Glide is a 2 pc variety, and the Wake consists of 3 pieces and a lexan bill. These baits retail at $190 per.
The Wake swims at a tight and natural cadence at moderate speed, producing a subtle wake, slight head turn, and swimming action from the rear 2 sections and oversized soft plastic tail. I would recommend fishing on a snap or ring, as it seemed to allow for more fluid movement of the bait.
Slowing down, a crawl allows for a wider action, showing a lazy gill on the surface. Visible surface wake is minimal, but the action continues to be apparent even down to a crawl.
On a fast retrieve, rod tip down allows the bait to dive about 6 inches or so, and will accept faster retrieve speeds at this rod position. Rod tip up gives you that traditional chopping and noisey topwater wake, but will not accept as much speed before leaning.
Last, I was unable to consistently walk the wake, but I was able to get some consistent back and forth turns and slight Glide with slow downward rod tip pulls. This gave the bait a good amount of action, while still staying relatively in the same place.
Moving on to the glide, the bait shows a wide back and forth swim on straight medium retrieve, with the bait turning almost 90 degrees of center during the swim. The bait stays relatively upright, with a bit of roll on the transitions. You can also speed up to a burn without issue, and the bait maintains that wide swim and a thump is felt back to the rod.
Slower shorting inputs can be done with the reel or the rod. With the reel, short and choppy inputs will get the bait turning back and forth with a little glide, and it will also gain some depth as you hit the bait harder... The inputs with the rod seem to be more consistent, giving you that sharp back and forth turning action, with with little less body roll.
You will not find the Heavyweight to be a distance glider, but slower downward rod pulls will allow the bait to Glide to either direction about a foot or so. Every once in a while the bait will straighten out and glide a little further, and as I became more comfortable with the bait, I was able to do this more consistently.
I chose different rods for each bait. For the Wake, I went with a Levaithan XH paired with a Tranx 400 and 25 lb copoly. For the glide, I went with the new KGB XH swimbait rod, paired with a curado 300E and 20 pb copoly. These rods could be interchanged with each bait without much change in action, but each felt more adept in the pairing I selected.
Hope you have a wonderful Sunday, and enjoy some family time if possible. Thanks for watching, and see you next Sunday.
