Both Mental illness and Diabetes are common among the population. Is there any connection between them?Whether one contribute to the risk of the other? These are the questions to be answered. Unfortunately, diabetes screening rates are low among adults with severe mental illness who take antipsychotic medications. Antipsychotic drugs can contributes to a higher risk of Diabetes. These drugs can cause weight gain, a contributing factor to type 2 diabetes. According to the American Diabetes Association, Anyone taking these medicines should undergo diabetes screening every year. Diabetic screening should be done at least one outpatient visit to a primary care provider. To improve care for persons with serious mental illness, physical health care system is very important. Many a time physical health of such patients are neglected. The findings support "efforts to integrate behavioral health and primary care".
