RENAISSANCE GARDEN 2022: Amaryllis

The Renaissance Garden project is based on a contemporary interpretation of cultural heritage. It brings an unconventionally conceived program through intermedia performance; using live musical performances of the repertoire that covers a wide range from the Renaissance to contemporary authors as well as archival materials that outline the protagonists of Dubrovnik salons of the past. The female performers on stage evoke their historical counterparts who are embedded in the performance on the screen.

Music is curated in accordance with the performance space i.e. the modern setting of the restored summer villa Bunić-Kaboga from the 16th century. A mixed repertoire, the kind of which is known to have been performed in the salons of the summer residencies of Dubrovnik aristocrats is conceived as an assemblage of early music combined with more modern works.

The mythical significance of the magical sceneries of the Dubrovnik River suburban area is highlighted as well. Namely, the second part brings musicians who appear as fairies, the mythical creatures from the legends of the Dubrovnik river Ombla, where numerous old Renaissance villas were situated. They represent an imaginary world that has always served as an inspiration to artists and inhabitants of the Dubrovnik summer villas who gathered in its salons, but they also represent the Muses and the nymphs as the common ancient models of inspiration for both the European and Renaissance Dubrovnik poets and Classicist Latinists and musicians.

By following up conceptualization of space as one of the main specificities of Dubrovnik environmental performance, this performance is at the same time a re-constructed salon gathering and a (de)constructed artistic intervention of reviving the (lost) spaces in which the rich cultural and social life once took place.


The project is realized and performed by The Rest is Music NGO with the support of the Caboga Stiftung Foundation, the City of Dubrovnik, and the Dubrovnik Tourist Board in collaboration with Dubrovnik Heritage PLC.
