Great Masters of Fantasy Art Book Review - Boris Vallejo Greg Hildebrandt Rowena Morrill and more!

I love looking through fantasy art books - I always get inspired with new ideas! This one features 16 artists:

There are definitely some greats in here. Greg Hildebrandt. Boris Vallejo. Barclay Shaw. There are some who maybe aren't up to the same level but do have some interesting views to offer.

My issue is not with the artist selection. Any book is going to have items which appeal to some fans and not to others. That's OK.

My issue is with the inane printing of the images.

Sure, it might seem nifty to print images fully end-to-end in a book. But the problem is those ends get sucked down into the binding. I had to practically snap the binding to take the photo of Boris's slave girl being sold image. Otherwise you lost the entire left side of the image into the gutter. And Greg's artwork of Loki? The key features are completely sucked down into the gutter.

If you're fortunate enough to want to only look at the central part of a one-page image, you're OK. But if you actually want to appreciate the full artwork the way it was meant to, from end to end, you just can't do that unless you break the book and turn it into loose pages.

Absolutely baffling.
