The Galapagos Shark is a strong grey hunter that looks exactly like what most people imagine when they think of a shark. Its scientific name is Carcharhinus galapagos. The first part comes from Greek words meaning sharp nose and the second part is because it was first discovered by scientists in the Galapagos Islands. Even though it has this name it lives at many different islands around the world as long as the water is warm and crystal clear.

These sharks love island life and prefer rocky reefs and deep blue waters instead of staying near big continents. They are very curious and active during the day often swimming in small groups to explore. They are not picky eaters and hunt for fish octopuses and sometimes even sea lions. They grow very slowly and can live for about 20 to 25 years. Mothers do not lay eggs but instead give birth to live pups that are already about two feet long.

Today these sharks face challenges because they grow so slowly and are easily hurt by overfishing. Also as climate change makes the ocean warmer and changes the number of fish available these sharks may have to travel further to find food which puts their survival at risk.
