Stolen Movie Review by Sucharita - Stolen is inspired by the 2018 Karbi Anglong lynching—look it up once you’ve watched the film. It was a horrifying real-life incident where WhatsApp rumours had caused a mass frenzy, things had very VERY quickly and tragically accelerated. Again, if you don’t want spoilers, watch first, read after. However, the film doesn’t quite re-enact that event as it had played out. Much like Ghaywan’s Homebound, Stolen expands on the conditions that made the incident possible, ruminating on the fears and rage that are experienced by different kinds of people. What it takes for real life to turn into a tinderbox, and why are sparks so readily available? Stolen is a study of a new kind of angry young man in India, with a directionless anger. Like a firecracker that’s gone off in the wrong direction, Stolen is interested in people beginning to implode on their way to burning the whole system down.
