We are deep in the North Maine Woods in Piscataquis County, where we see a pair of abandoned steam engines. These two steam engines worked for the Eagle Lake and West Branch Railroad along Eagle Lake, hauling wood pulp cars from the railroad's inception in 1926 until its demise in 1933. At one time, this railroad handled about one-fifth of all of the pulp in the country. After the railroad closed, the engines, as well as about 30 cars and a ton of assorted machinery, were parked here and left in the positions you see them here. Originally, there was an engine house, but it burned down in the late 60's. These two engines and all the cars and assorted equipment have sat here for 83 years. It's amazing to see them, and think about what things must have been like in the days that they ran. One of the engines was built in 1897, the other in 1901, both for the New York Central.
