The 1996 season was the first season of CART after the IndyCar split, and with CART remained most of the tracks as well as most of the teams. Most notably, this season began a four-year stretch of dominance by Chip Ganassi. With the Reynard chassis and the powerful Honda engine, Jimmy Vasser and Alex Zanardi dominated the season, winning a combined 7 races and finishing 1st and 3rd in the championship.
