The Indian government recently approved a large ₹7,300-crore scheme to develop domestic manufacturing of rare-earth permanent magnets. These magnets are crucial for electric vehicles, wind turbines, electronics, defence equipment and many other modern technologies. Until now, India has depended heavily on imports, especially from China, which dominates global rare-earth processing and magnet production. The new scheme aims to reduce this dependence and build a complete local ecosystem.

Most of the funding is meant for setting up manufacturing units, buying advanced machinery and creating large-scale production capacity. A smaller portion is reserved for operational support and helping industries stabilise during the initial years. The government has set a long-term goal of reaching a production capacity of around six thousand tonnes of rare-earth magnets per year by the end of the decade.

This push is also part of India’s broader effort to strengthen its critical-minerals supply chain. The country does have sizeable rare-earth reserves, but processing and high-precision magnet manufacturing have been weak areas. The scheme is expected to attract companies into this sector, create new industrial hubs and give India a stronger role in the global clean-energy supply chain.

However, there are challenges too. Producing high-quality rare-earth magnets requires specialised technology, and some of the key equipment is controlled by a few countries. Building the full value chain will take time, strong industry participation and consistent policy support. Still, the approval of this scheme marks a significant step in India’s plan to become more self-reliant in critical advanced materials.
