A Douglas C-54 Skymaster aircraft, with two individuals aboard, met a tragic end as it plunged into the Tanana River near Fairbanks, Alaska, on Tuesday, immediately erupting into flames. Tragically, no survivors have been located following the crash.

Departing from Fairbanks International Airport earlier that day, the aircraft encountered disaster merely 7 miles away. It crashed near the riverbank into a steep incline, where it subsequently ignited, detailed by the Alaska State Troopers.

Amidst the confusion, Michaela Matherne, who was traveling from Galena to Fairbanks to catch another flight, recounted her experience. Her flight was rerouted to the crash site to assist in pinpointing its exact location. Initially believing they were witnessing a fire at a local cabin or fishing camp, Matherne expressed her shock upon realizing the actual disaster. "We only understood the gravity of the situation upon landing a few minutes later," she shared with The Associated Press through Facebook Messenger. "Hearing the news was both shocking and saddening."

The C-54, a military adaptation of the Douglas DC-4 used extensively during World War II, could originally seat 44 passengers but has predominantly been modified for freight purposes in recent times, as noted by www.airlines.net. While the Federal Aviation Administration recognizes the aircraft as a C-54, it has also been identified as a DC-4 by state troopers.
