We end volume 2 of Field Trip with a double feature: Indiana and Illinois, in night and day. While it’s been so nice to revisit all of these songs from City Shade/Country Sun, these two stand out. I think often about a night at The Pharmacy, where a room full of people sang Illinois with me, without asking – by far one of the most special live music experiences I’ve had. Like on the album, we preceded Illinois with Indiana as its intro. This was the first song of mine a fan ever covered, and is equally special to me, but pokes its head out less often. It felt fitting to end this series of videos with these two songs, with night and day representing rebirth or new beginnings or something cliche but pertinent like that.

And no, I’ve still never been to Illinois, except to catch a connecting flight. Maybe once the country is in better shape, it’s time for a drive.
