Join us on this week’s Black Doctors Talk Podcast which features our guest, Dr. Terry Marsh who speaks to us on the topics of battling through challenging times to seek new opportunities, refusing to make excuses, and showing resilience to personal commitments. Dr. Marsh, who is a veteran of the United States Army, served as a military journalist, photojournalist, and broadcaster. Today, he is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism at Norfolk State University. Dr. Marsh has a strong interest in African American media ownership issues and in fair representation in media content.

During the podcast, Dr. Marsh shares insights learned while serving in the United States military. Although circumstances and the environment were not ideal, leaning on his passion for photojournalism, media and broadcasting was ignited and perfected. Dr. Marsh has had exciting experiences in various careers including media sales, audio/video production, voice-over, public/community relations, public affairs liaison, and even a tour publicist for a national concert production company. While sharing what led him down the path to the doctorate, Dr. Marsh also strongly advocates for media ownership in the African American community and also brings practicality and examples to the classroom as an Assistant Professor at Norfolk State University. With a focus on media, Dr. Marsh speaks on the importance of fair and accurate representation of African Americans in media and how the current reflected images have created negative perceptions and false realities of our lived experiences. Dr. Marsh advocates for education to remedy these challenges and believes that a diverse media environment promotes greater intercultural understanding.

Dr. Marsh earned a Doctorate in Communication, Culture and Media Studies from the Cathy Hughes School of Communication at Howard University; MA in Media and Communication, both from Norfolk State University; and BS in Mass Communication from Norfolk University. A native of Norfolk, Virginia, Dr. Marsh is excited to be teaching at his alma mater.
