SriLankan Social Media is full of praise for a Forest Department official who refused to violate the law over land in Negombo to protect the environment despite pressure from a State Minister & Villagers. Video of The female wildlife officer standing her ground despite pressure from a group of villagers & State Minister Sanath Nishantha to release land for a playground for school children is now going viral in Social Media.

Many have taken social media to praise the officer for standing her ground and not bowing down to political pressure to violate the law of the land. The female officer is now identified as Devanee Jayatilake an assistant conservator attached to Sri Lanka Forest Department. In the video which is going viral now State Minister Sanath Nishantha is seen telling the officer that since Sri Lanka is a small country with a shortage of land she must reach a consensus with the villagers on the matter.Officer Devanee Jayatilake then points out the importance of protecting the environment to ensure there is clean air to breathe. She also had to engage in several heated arguments with the villagers who were not convinced by her decision.

“Thanks, Devanee Jayathilaka.You are not alone. This should be our fight too. What she says is alarming. Where are the environmental loving people in this area. Go and talk to your politicians. If you stay silent you will have to borrow oxygen from others.” Environmentalist Hemantha Withanage posted on his Facebook.
