On this Bravo And Brava Italian Americans in Hollywood podcast episode No. 49, hosted by film enthusiasts Daley Giacopella and Sadie Bruni, we celebrate the contribution of actor Don Ameche who has left an indelible mark on Hollywood and the American entertainment industry.
Don Ameche was born Dominic Felix Amici on May 31, 1908, in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The son of Italian immigrants, his father, Felice Amici, hailed from Montemonaco, Italy, and his mother, Barbara Etta Hertel, had German and Irish ancestry. His surname, "Amici," means "friends" in Italian, a fitting name for an actor who won the hearts of audiences worldwide.
Ameche attended Marquette University and the University of Wisconsin before pursuing a career in acting. He began in radio, gaining fame as a charming leading man and host. His smooth voice and charisma made him a star in 1930s and 1940s Hollywood, with standout roles in "The Story of Alexander Graham Bell" (1939) and "Heaven Can Wait" (1943).
Ameche's career resurgence came in the 1980s when he won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in "Cocoon" (1985).
Known for his versatility, Ameche appeared in over 90 films and numerous TV shows. His final film, "Corrina, Corrina" (1994), showcased his enduring talent. Ameche passed away on December 6, 1993, at age 85, leaving behind a legacy of warmth, humor, and timeless performances.
