Lake Valley is located west of Hatch, New Mexico. It's height was during the 1880's when the population grew to 4,000 due to the silver mining industry. After the silver bust of 1893 the town declined sharply. It was then hit by a fire that wiped out most of the main street. There was a slight revival in the early 1900's with manganese mining, but that soon died out as well. The last permanent resident left in the 1990's, and a couple of caretakers now care for the site a few days of the week. The school house has been converted into a town museum. There is also an audio tour and guide available.
