The Virtual Tape Machine is a super cool, super unique plugin that comes in the Slate Digital Everything Bundle.

The Virtual Tape Machine can be thought of as a mastering plugin, but it does so much more than that. It is an emulation of a, you guessed it, tape machine.

As audio engineers and sound engineers, we all love tape. We love the idea of tape. Tape machines have been used on countless legendary records, since that’s all we had to use before computers came along.

The options on this plugin are ones you would find on an actual analog tape machine:

Input gain
Output gain
Tape bias - which changes how the tape reacts to the signal
Tape style options - 456 and FG9
Tape speed - 15 and 30 IPS (inches per second).

The faster the tape is running over the heads, the more top-end detail is retained and, naturally, the more tape is being used.

The Virtual Tape Machine is great for the reason that you get an “unlimited supply” of tape. It adds a unique depth and characters style to your tracks.

But that’s not all the Virtual Tape Machine can do! There is a grouping function on the Virtual Tape Machine. Grouping allows to control the parameters of many VTM instances at once.

This is awesome because it lets you do the full work-flow of working on a tape machine setup.

Using the grouping function really lets the emulator shine and it produces a very accurate and true representation of the sound that analog tape machines are known for.

This plugin can give you a nice subtle texture to create 60’s and 70’s sounding tracks. Sure, we wish there were some more options on the Virtual Tape Machine.

But for what it is and what its designed to do, it does it phenomenally.

When it comes to mixing, mastering a music production, the modern age affords us an almost limitless palette of sonic tools.

Whether analog or digital, the number of effects, plugins, and outboard gear that you can use for your projects is essentially endless.
