Superb triple Eurofighter Typhoon performance takeoffs of 29 Squadron at RAF Coningsby.

The Eurofighter Typhoon has one of the best (if not, the best) thrust to weight (TWR) ratios in the world, meaning it can accelerate, even climbing vertically at 315m/s. Not even gravity can slow it down when it climbs in steep angles and at pure vertically angles. It is one of the fastest accelerating fighter jets in the world, meaning it can outmanoeuvre its opponent. It is a MACH 2 jet, which means it can reach speeds faster than the speed of sound twice over.

Performance Takeoffs are one of the most exciting takeoffs you will and we were fortunate to capture a triple set. Speaking of triple, the callsign for these three Typhoons of 29 Squadron was TRIPLE X. This represents the three Xs on the emblem/marking of the squadron. We mentioned in our last video that XXX does not equal 29 but there were two traditional stores which date back to the 1920s. I still love the story regarding the misinterpretation of the instructions for the design. The designers were told to place an X, an X and then ONE X, literally XXIX. It was suppose to have the two XXs then the roundel and then IX but it was treated as an X, X and 'one more' X.

Anyways back to the takeoffs. Performance takeoffs can be called unrestricted climbs and sometimes known as quick climbs or zoom climb. Though 'Quick Climbs' are different with regards to the start. Quick climbs are a case of accelerating down the runway, usually clearing the runway at an altitude of around 100ft and then the aircraft will pull hard and climb in a vertical climb. This means the aircraft has reached a very high speed so that it can climb quickly. This is very common at RAF Lakenheath. Now the Typhoon on the other hand can get off the ground in seconds and instead of gaining the speed all the way to the end of the runway, it is capable of doing this within seconds on takeoff. This, in concept, means that the Typhoon is a powerful aircraft.

Performance takeoffs are a necessary type of takeoff to clear barriers in the airspace, restrictions in the airspace, aerodromes with small runways or to avoid other aircraft that are in the skies.
