Extra info: Turtuk was not a part of India until 1971 Indo-Pak War. Once the Indian Army gained control over this region, it was added to the Indian Administered state of Jammu and Kashmir. This Baltistani region consists of four villages - Turtuk, Tyakshi, Chalunkha and Dhothang; the rest is under Pakistan. After the revocation of Article 370, it was made a part of Ladakh. Even though it is now part of the UT of Ladakh, the culture is clearly different from the rest of Ladakh. The villagers live a peaceful, simple and minimalistic life. You will find some of the most trustworthy and guileless people here, ready to give you their products and take the money later. The most amazing example of it was the small Women Self-Help group outlet where one can try the Baltistani dress and when asked about the price they say 'whatever you like'.
