The Earth-centered astronomy (or geocentric model) was an ancient understanding that placed the Earth at the center of the universe. This model was particularly supported by scientists such as Aristotle and Ptolemy in Ancient Greece. The model developed by Ptolemy, known as the Ptolemaic system, remained the dominant astronomical model in the Western world throughout the Middle Ages. In this model, the Earth was positioned at the center of the universe, with all celestial bodies revolving around it.

However, Sun-centered astronomy (or heliocentric model) began to be proposed in the 16th century by Nicolaus Copernicus. In 1543, Copernicus published De Revolutionibus Orbium Coelestium (On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres), in which he argued that the Sun was the center of the universe and that the Earth and other planets revolved around it. This marked a significant step in the Scientific Revolution. In the early 17th century, Johannes Kepler supported Copernicus' model by formulating precise mathematical laws of planetary motion. Galileo Galilei further confirmed this model with crucial evidence from his telescope observations. Finally, in 1687, Isaac Newton published the Laws of Motion, introducing the law of universal gravitation. This law explained the fundamental reason behind planetary motion around the Sun, solidifying the scientific foundation of the heliocentric model.

It seems like they all worked quite hard together to bury Ptolemy’s geocentric model in history. Don’t you think so?
