With less than 50% of Colorado’s average snowpack this winter, we’ve had to get creative with our backcountry ski days. When the snow conditions aren’t ideal, sometimes the only option is to change the objective — so we hiked into the Colorado backcountry for sunset and squeezed in some night skiing laps under freezing alpine skies.

What started as a cold evening quickly turned frigid. By the time we reached the top of our ski lines, temperatures were nearing 0ºF. Despite below-average snow conditions and thin coverage, we made the most of our mini backcountry adventure and enjoyed every turn we could find.

This episode captures what it’s really like backcountry skiing in Colorado during a low snow year — adapting to snowpack conditions, managing cold weather, and chasing adventure after dark. Night ski touring brings a completely different perspective to the mountains, from quiet alpine sunsets to skiing by headlamp.
