Clinicians
People with chronic illnesses
We want to hear from you, what fills your cup??
If you are one of those highly empathic people, you most likely know, it’s a double edged sword! While extremely helpful for us in understanding others experiences, empathy can also lead to emotional exhaustion, loss of self, and changes in our perception of safety and control, placing us at risk of burn-out or vicarious trauma. This is especially true during times like the holidays, when we have added stress and strain. Luckily, we have some ways to protect ourselves, starting with self-care.
Clinicians and people affected by chronic illness, how full is your cup today? Self-care is a parallel process! What is helping for our clients, is vital for us to practice.
And as humans, actively practicing self-care is vital for us to be able to take care of and connect with others. This is akin to what flight attendants tell us before take off- we have to put our oxygen mask on first! And active self-care may look more than adding pleasurable activities.
Attending to spiritual, physical, or emotional needs, setting boundaries and limits for ourselves, regulating our emotions, and practicing being kind to ourselves, are important protective factors.
So, what fills your cup, this holiday season? Please drop some ideas below!
