The color of the ocean appears blue primarily due to the way water absorbs and scatters sunlight. The sky appears blue because of a similar phenomenon called Rayleigh scattering, where shorter blue wavelengths of light are scattered more effectively by the gases and particles in the Earth's atmosphere.
