Diabetes Simulation Resources to improve your patient care experiences can be found all over. In this video we are going to talk about some of our favorites.
November is National Diabetes Awareness Month here in the US and Thanksgiving was last week so it is a great time to talk about training for diabetes care and debrief what we covered.
00:37 Why Simulate Diabetes?
01:00 What simulation methodologies do you use to train about diabetes?
01:43 Parasocial relationships for diabetes education
02:17 How can I simulate a point of care glucose check?
02:52 Diabetes care task trainers
03:30 Where can you find some (Free) scenarios for diabetes?
So, why do we simulate diabetes? More than 30 Million people in the US or almost 10% of the population had diabetes in 2015. Many of these people don't even know they have it. Of the patients that are currently hospitalized, over 25% of them have diabetes. As it is a common reason people come to the hospital or is something that likely impacts a significant portion of our hospitalized patients, we need to train to deal with it.
The main items we teach about diabetes to healthcare learners in our labs are recognition, evaluation, testing, and treatment. Diabetes care is also a major opportunity in our curriculum to tackle cultural competence.
