Trekking the Darien Gap in Panama with a Dog

We started 2024 in Nicaragua, riding our motorcycles south to Panama to begin our 5-day trek across the Darien Gap.

The route took us along the migrant route but in reverse. We started in Panama near the end of the Pan-America highway and ended in Puerto Obaldia on the Caribbean Sea. All the while, Whimsy wore her ‪@TractiveGPS‬ tracker so we could measure her activity.

We dropped our motorcycles off at the Panama airport where they would fly to Bogota, Colombia once we safely crossed.

We were accompanied by a 5-man patrol from the Panama Border Patrol ‪@SENAFRONTPANAMA.‬

From their SENAFRONT base in Bajo Chiquito, we hiked for 5 days through waist high rivers, over slick boulders, through gorgeous jungle, and up and over steep, muddy mountains.

We met migrants from all around the world, men, women and small children, trekking this perilous journey to seek a better life.

By the end of day 5, we made it to the coast! And from there, we crossed into Colombia to continue the journey south!
