In Matthew 18:21–35, Jesus gives us one of the most sobering and life-changing parables ever spoken — the story of a servant forgiven an unpayable debt who, in turn, refuses to forgive another for a mere fraction of what he owed. It’s a mirror held up to our hearts, revealing just how easily we forget the mercy we’ve received. When Peter asked, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive my brother who sins against me? Up to seven times?” Jesus answered, “Not seven times, but seventy times seven.” Forgiveness, He said, is beyond calculation. It cannot be measured, counted, or capped.

The servant’s debt was astronomical — ten thousand talents, an amount no human could repay. Yet, moved with compassion, the king released him and wiped the slate clean. That is what God has done for us in Christ — canceling the record of our sin through the blood of His Son. But when that same servant refused mercy to another, he revealed that his heart had never truly been changed. Jesus’ warning is clear: those who are forgiven must also forgive. A heart that clings to bitterness betrays the grace it claims to know.

Forgiveness is not weakness — it is strength made perfect in mercy. It sets both the offender and the offended free. The true child of God forgives, not because it is easy, but because he has been forgiven an infinite debt. Our Lord calls us to forgive “from the heart” — fully, freely, and faithfully — just as He has forgiven us.
