Tumuhirwe Alice is a farmer from Kibona Village, Nyakayojo division, in Mbarara City who grows Beans, Irish potatoes, Cowpeas and Bananas.

She puts more effort in growing bananas because it is from them that she gets more money.
She has grown bananas for 10 years but found a problem of a pest that many people know as “ekiwuka.” She explains that this pest attacks the pseudo stems, and corms by digging tunnels in them. She further explains that when you cut the corms, you find tunnels that turn black and the corm eventually starts rotting and when they start rotting, you find many other insects. You’re also likely to find other insects that look like maggots and the adult weevil.

She says, weevil infestation causes the roots of the plants to rot and dry. When the roots dry, the young plants lose vigour and dry. Heavily infested plants produce very small bunches and have reduced resistance to drought and strong winds.

She also says, she normally harvests 600 bunches but due to infestation, she started harvesting 400 bunches. She tried using other pesticides but failed. She was advised to use ash that also failed.

She listened to Bukoola Chemicals program on Radio West, then visited an agronomist from Bukoola who advised her to use Dudu Guard. She uses Dudu Guard twice every year. Every after 6 months, she mixes 200mls in 20 litres of water. She pours 2 cups of the pesticide on every sucker.
She adds on that, the advantage with using Dudu Guard is that it works effectively on larvae and adult banana weevils.

She recommends farmers who grow bananas to use Dudu Guard and those planning to grow bananas to use Dudu Guard because when you dip suckers in Dudu Guard before planting, the weevils and nematodes die leaving the corms pest free for planting.
