Описание к видео Pushing Hands (tui shou) competition

This is in Houston for ICMAC (2.2012)

Thanks for visiting. Find me on my Patreon page for the Taijiquan Calendar Series, where I break down the form into small daily drills.

UPDATE (01.21)
I appreciate everyone’s interest in this video and in pushing hands. This was a very long time ago and I have mixed feelings about this video now.
I have learned more about my opponent so I feel bad about leaving this video uploaded, as it doesn't represent the full story of myself or what I envision to be a wholistic picture of martial arts.

What you can't see from this clip is that the story continued on. A few years later, there was an older man who entered the competition to compete against me, and actually mentioned the match seen in this video, saying that he was a relative. I got the sense that he needed to, for lack of a better word, avenge a "loss." And so it was in that spirit that we competed that day.

This kind of thing is rampant in the martial arts industry, yes? We hear stories all the time of schools or students claiming superiority, revenge, in-school fighting and political strife. For me, this energy of rivalry and ego, has tainted and skewed the spirit of friendly competition and celebration of the arts. Martial Arts holds so much potential for so much more.

After all these years I’m beginning to think that we are being misled. Why has martial arts become more known for "stopping the weapon" ("wushu") instead of being about defeating an opponent? Why do we continue to do this to the arts? I just feel that resentment and revenge doesn’t honor our ancestors and we have possibly lost sight of the big picture.

These days, being that there is so much conflict and division displayed across platforms, I would hope to see martial artists as conflict-resolution professionals emerge as new world leaders.

We can only be accountable for what we do. What I didn't know is that just simply competing in this competition had ill effect on another person, to the point that he felt the need to compete against me. In a way it isn't about him or about me, but more about the psychological environment and one's reason for training.
