South and Central Florida beaches have been inundated by what scientists are calling a record amount of sargassum seaweed this summer. The thick and wide band of seaweed not only presents an unsightly and stinky mess that keeps swimmers out of the water, it also can ensnare sea turtle hatchlings. The hatchlings spend nearly two months in nests dug in the sand by their mothers, then they emerge and make a mad-dash for the ocean. This summer, the sargassum seaweed has trapped many of them. Good samaritans have been lifting the hatchlings over the seaweed and placing them in or near their ocean destination. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission prefers that people who find sea turtle hatchlings in distress call the commission's hotline at *FWC. The woman releasing sea turtle hatchlings in this video is trained and permitted to handle them. Scientists blame the record seaweed bloom on climate change warming the ocean and an overabundance of nutrients -- mainly in the form of agricultural byproducts and fertilizer -- running-off into the sea. Sargassum seaweed has become a massive problem for Caribbean islands, Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula and Florida's East Coast beaches from Central Florida southward.
