Haunted by the ghosts of their past and future, a baker and a schoolchild both hear the same buzzing of a broken globe in a post-silent cinema melodrama about friendship and the proposition of reading, writing, and reckoning in an artificial landscape.
A movie in search of silence begins with two singers mutely clapping blocks of wood in the middle of a field, then dives in and out of a felt pen landscape, promising to tell a story through song. A baker, a man, a spy, a schoolchild, masked servants and the company they keep are all introduced in ambiguous relation to one another via intertitled dialogues. Where is my friend, they ask, whilst the broken teeth of the piano play a tune of heartbreak and desire. Meanwhile a mentor and student tour a house of learning, after which the student sits down to connect the dots of the ongoing story. When all the characters meet to discuss roles, everyone wants to know, who will play the bad guy?
