Описание к видео Negotiating Culturally Safe Practice

The Australian Evaluation Society’s strategic priorities for 2019-2022 include aspirations that relate to strengthening culturally safe evaluation processes and practices and ensuring that cultural safety is an essential evaluation competency. This seminar contributes to NT evaluators building a shared understanding of cultural safety, and provides an opportunity for exploration and discussion of culturally safe practice in NT contexts.
In this seminar, Dr Robyn Williams will provide an overview of cultural safety as a decolonisation model of health care in general, and specifically (but not exclusively) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The history, contention, criticisms of, and necessity for cultural safety will also be discussed, along with the principles (social justice, trust, respect, self-awareness, and self-reflection). Additionally, there will be a discussion of ways for negotiating culturally safe practice and the need for cultural safety frameworks for organisations and systems.

Robyn Williams (BA, RN, Grad DipEd, MPET, PhD) is a non-Indigenous woman who has nursing and education qualifications and forty plus years of experience of working with Indigenous peoples, primarily in the NT but also all over Australia. Her experience and interests include cultural safety, effective communication; curriculum development and program implementation; evaluation of community-based programs; and qualitative research in Indigenous, rural, and remote health issues.
Robyn spent the last 30 years working mostly in the tertiary sector, where she taught across several undergraduate, postgraduate, and short courses.
In 2020, Robyn was awarded her PhD thesis on exploring preparation for health professionals to be culturally safe and effective practitioners in Indigenous primary health care settings (urban, rural, and remote).
In addition to design and delivery of cultural safety workshops and qualitative research short courses, Robyn is co-supervising PhD students and tutoring Indigenous nursing students. Robyn is currently working on developing a Cultural Safety Framework for the NT ACCHO sector and is also engaged in a range of community based projects as a qualitative research consultant.

This seminar was organised by the Northern Territory Regional Network Committee of the AES.
