Shoebill facts: as tall as a child | Animal Fact Files

Shoebills are some amazing birds. Not only can they stand as tall as the average eight year old human, they make clacking sounds with their beaks, eat fish whole, and poop on themselves! These birds look like a cross between a pelican and a stork and are even sometimes referred to as shoebill storks. Also, they have a serious case of sibling rivalry!

Scientific Name: Balaeniceps rex
Range: east central Africa
Size: up to 5 feet (1.5m) tall
Diet: fish like lungfish, rodents, snakes, turtles, birds, and young crocodiles
Lifespan: 30+ years
