DESIGN DETAILS
Deregulation has significantly intensified power transactions across transmission networks, frequently driving system components toward their operational limits. Owing to economic and environmental constraints on transmission expansion, Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices have emerged as a practical and flexible solution by enabling dynamic control of power flow parameters. Previous studies have largely employed Genetic Algorithm (GA) based and multi-objective evolutionary optimization techniques for FACTS allocation; however, these approaches often suffer from slow convergence, high computational burden, and sensitivity to algorithmic parameters. In contrast, the Zebra Optimization Algorithm (ZOA), inspired by natural foraging and predator-avoidance behaviors, offers an effective balance between exploration and exploitation with fewer control parameters, making it well suited for complex power system optimization problems.

In this work, a ZOA-based optimization framework is proposed for the optimal placement and sizing of FACTS devices in a meshed IEEE 30-bus transmission network. Thyristor Controlled Series Capacitor (TCSC) and Static Var Compensator (SVC) are optimally allocated to minimize transmission losses, enhance voltage stability, and alleviate congestion. The proposed methodology integrates a MATLAB-based Newton–Raphson load flow technique, ensuring improved solution accuracy under heavily stressed operating conditions. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed approach are evaluated under multiple loading scenarios (100%, 110%, 120%, and 130%). Simulation results demonstrate that the ZOA-based approach exhibits superior convergence characteristics, improved voltage profiles, and enhanced congestion mitigation with reduced power losses when compared to conventional optimization techniques.
