Описание к видео From Rain to Weeds: The Farm After the Long Rains - Part 1.

After months of much-needed rain, the farm has transformed yet again — but this time, the story is a little different. The heavy downpours have slowed, but the ground is still soaked, and the black alluvial soil has turned into a farmer’s slippery challenge. The roads leading to the farm are muddy, making every trip a careful adventure, especially on a motorcycle. Some afternoons still bring showers, just enough to keep the soil heavy and difficult to work.

The weeds, however, are loving it. They’ve grown so tall and thick that in some spots, our young orange trees are hidden beneath a green jungle. Still, the crops are thriving. The pixie oranges are now big and plump — mostly green, but a few have started turning yellow, hinting at the sweet ripeness to come. The butterflies seem to be celebrating too, dancing around the blossoms in the warm breeze.

Not everything has gone smoothly. In some maize plots, the water refuses to drain, leaving patches where nothing will grow. But in the higher, well-drained areas, the maize and pigeon peas (nzuu) are reaching for the sky. Our biggest headache? Weeds. Removing the tylka tomatoes before the rains seemed harmless at the time, but we didn’t clear the area properly. Now, it’s overrun with thick, stubborn weeds. The silver lining — once we pull them out, they’ll make rich compost for the farm. For now, we work slowly, waiting for the rains to finally stop so we can till and reclaim our fields. This is just part one of the story — the journey of the farm after the rains.
