When you hear the name Lucid Motors, your first thought is probably futuristic electric luxury sedans like the Lucid Air, which has taken the EV world by storm with its blend of elegance and groundbreaking range. But now, Lucid is aiming to push its boundaries in a new direction—off-road exploration. At the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, Lucid unveiled the Gravity X concept, a bold and rugged take on its all-electric Gravity SUV. This concept hints at a future where luxury EVs might not just conquer highways, but dirt roads too.
At first glance, the Gravity X looks like a crossover stepping outside of its comfort zone. The standard Gravity is sleek and luxurious, but this concept transforms its personality with a tougher, more adventure-ready stance. The upgrades start up top, where integrated roof crossbars support a roof box equipped with auxiliary LED lights—practical for those late-night trips into the wilderness. The suspension has been lifted to increase ground clearance, and the SUV now rolls on 21- and 22-inch wheels wrapped in aggressive all-terrain tires, clearly signaling its off-pavement ambitions.
The bodywork is no less impressive. The front end has been reworked with a skid plate and integrated tow hooks, essential tools if the road gets a little too rough. Around the sides, plastic cladding lines the wheel arches and continues into the side skirts and rear bumper, offering both style and protection. These touches give the Gravity X a more commanding road presence, bridging the gap between a luxury crossover and a true off-roader.
The paint finish is also worth noting. Lucid chose a satin Astral Drift color accented with brushed metal highlights and a contrasting black roof. The Stealth Appearance package introduces darker trim pieces, while a unique topographical map graphic on the hood showcases California landmarks like Big Sur and Death Valley. Subtle but thoughtful details also appear on the sill plates and rocker panels, which display the exact geographic coordinates of Pebble Beach—the very place where the concept made its debut.
Inside, Lucid made sure the Gravity X doesn’t lose its luxury appeal. The interior has been refined with durable floor mats, premium leather seating with orange accents, and a microsuede-wrapped steering wheel for a sporty feel. Elegant walnut wood trim stretches across the dashboard and center console, blending rugged ambition with Lucid’s signature upscale craftsmanship.
Beneath the skin, however, the Gravity X keeps the same hardware as the standard Gravity Grand Touring. Power comes from dual electric motors delivering a staggering 828 horsepower and drawing energy from a 123 kWh battery pack. This setup provides up to 450 miles of EPA-estimated range and catapults the SUV from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds. Those numbers put it firmly in super-SUV territory.
Of course, adding off-road hardware could slightly impact range and efficiency. A higher ride height and chunkier tires usually mean more drag and rolling resistance. Still, with such an enormous battery and performance figures that already impress, Lucid seems confident the Gravity X can balance ruggedness with capability.
According to Derek Jenkins, Lucid’s SVP of Design and Brand, the Gravity X represents “a natural evolution” of the SUV platform, expanding on Lucid’s vision of versatility. He described it as a concept designed for “adventurers looking to explore further off-road” without giving up luxury or range.
The big question now is whether the Lucid Gravity X will move from concept to production. Given that many of its upgrades—like the roof box, cladding, skid plates, and lifted suspension—are relatively modest, there’s little reason a production model couldn’t be offered. If Lucid greenlights it, the Gravity X would give the brand a credible rival to the Rivian R1S, a vehicle already appealing to outdoorsy EV buyers.
For now, the Gravity X is just a concept, but it signals a shift in thinking: EVs aren’t just for city streets and luxury boulevards anymore. They may soon be ready to tackle the wild, combining sustainability with adventure in a way we’ve never seen before.
