After four weeks of almost no sardines being caught by the local boats in Mounts Bay, the fleet finally found fish on their doorstep. Most of the boats came back with their tanks and tubs full, which in turn, kept the ice works working at full capacity in order to meet the demand. Just to put this landing of fish in perspective. the total sardine tock for the sea area surrounding Cornwall is set at nearly 450,000 tons. Many stocks of pelagic fish are fished up to and over 30% of the total stock. Last year the entire Cornish sardine fleet landings amounted to less than 9,000 tons, less than 2% of the total stock.
