Despite that temporary reprieve, the next 90 days will no doubt be packed with drama as the world’s two largest economies negotiate to a more stable deal. Well, as stable as a deal can be with Washington, DC.

But China holds a massive negotiating advantage, and that is its supply of important rare earth elements which it stopped selling to the US on April 4, following Trump’s Liberation Day tariffs.

That ban remains in place, even after the agreement was reached in Switzerland last weekend, and the US is desperate to get access to those elements, which are critical for advanced technologies across multiple industries, including defense, electronics and technology, and clean energy applications.

What will China want in return?
