This situation was helped by Tumpane's situational awareness and game management. The sequence began earlier in the at-bat when Tumpane called a strike on a pitch low in the zone. Although the processed strike zone computer numbers had the pitch as a correctly officiated strike, Contreras argued what he felt was a strike called below the hollow of the knee.

In turn, Braves catcher Tyler Flowers took offense at Contreras' insinuation, leading to a brief verbal exchange that escalated upon Contreras subsequently hitting a solo-HR. As Contreras left home plate, he yelled back at Flowers and motioned toward the Braves dugout as he ran the bases.

Tumpane demonstrated superb game awareness, knowing full well that something was bound to happen once Contreras returned to home plate at the conclusion of his home run trot. Tumpane strategically positioned himself by standing in front and between Flowers and Contreras, separating the two players before ordering Contreras to the Cubs' dugout and warning both teams. As the benches cleared, the umpires as a whole separated the two sides using the foul line between home plate and third base as a neutral zone of sorts, thus preventing a potential brawl situation.
