Carmen Perea arrived in Ecuador in 2006 with her infant daughter. She left her native Buenaventura, Colombia following the murder of her brother. An estimated 200,000 Colombians have fled to Ecuador, since 2007, in search of a safe place to restart their lives. Carmen reached Guayaquil, the largest city in the country, but finding a job and taking care of her baby girl was very difficult.

Through her tireless work to integrate into Ecuador's culture, Carmen managed to start a small business producing women's footwear. Impressed by Carmen's work, renowned Ecuadorean shoe designer Ile Miranda, reached out to her to collaborate on designing a Gladidora (gladiator) sandal. For Carmen, this sandal is symbolic of women's daily struggles, achievements and their courage to raise a family.
