William L. Pereira is an iconic Southern California architect—his projects include LACMA, CBS Television City, LAX, JPL and the Disneyland Hotel—but his work is being lost at a frightening pace.

In July 2016, a demolition permit appeared on the Metropolitan Water District (1963), an important transitional modernist work set on a circular hilltop overlooking Downtown Los Angeles. That notice, combined with concerns about the fate of LACMA and the Los Angeles Times Mirror corporate HQ, triggered the launch of the Pereira in Peril campaign, a collaboration between architect / historian Alan Hess and tour guide preservationists Richard Schave and Kim Cooper (Esotouric / LAVA).

On October 6, Alan Hess and Richard Schave led a walking tour of the historic LACMA campus (1965). The focus was on understanding the context of Pereira’s original commission, tracking the unfortunate architectural additions that began in the 1980s, questioning the suitability of Peter Zumthor's "blob" proposal and advocating for adaptive reuse of the existing Pereira buildings. Following the tour, attendees engage the tour guides in a Q&A session.
