Marvell Technology’s AI Business Isn’t Enough, and Why Digital Payments Are “Infrastructure”

In this edition of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey discuss how digital payments infrastructure providers like Visa (V), Mastercard (MA), and key PayPal (PYPL) partner Fiserv (FI) are big consumers of semiconductors and related electronic equipment. Many chip companies report a “communications” sales segment, and while telecom and internet providers are often the default, digital payments are often an overlooked portion of this end market.

With this digital payments market in mind, Marvell Technology Group’s disappointing earnings report is discussed, and why AI sales are not providing more growth for the business. There could be reasons for optimism next year. But for now, Marvell is still facing down sizable declines in many of its segments within networking equipment (payments, and now 5G mobile infrastructure) for at least another quarter or two.
