This sophomore album by this Chilean duo is less as a mere follow-up and more as a rebirth. Where the debut hinted at greatness, this record surges forward with a more deliberate momentum, where the transitions between its windswept slower passages and its feral accelerations become seamless, almost ritualistic, erasing the divide between the tamer (if there is actually anything like that) and more wrathful ones. There is nearly no padding of ambient here, save for the initial track and the sombre outro. The record instead plunges directly into the marrow of black metal’s raw traditions while braiding in a surprising undercurrent of funk-tinged bass lines, as a pulse of life beneath a body already marked by death.
Its harsh textures echo in this caustic landscape conjured by the lyrics, rain-drenched valleys where birdsong becomes a horrified chant, forests of dawn where fog infiltrates the soul, and never-ending cycles of death and rebirth. Despite each instrument carving its own path, the obtuse hammering drums drive the music into harsher territory, the bass emerging with almost rebellious prominence, and the guitars cleaving between tremolo fury and mournful melody. Vocals rise from this storm like a prophet’s lament, hoarse yet evocative, chanting of doomed warriors, cosmic mothers, and eternal returns.

Áthraos operates across the record with great fierceness imbuing it with some Finnish blackened flair, where visions of cursed landscapes, sacrificial devotion, cosmic mothers, and endless cycles of death and rebirth become more believable. What emerges is not a linear tale but a procession of archetypes and symbols, as each song is another fragment of a greater liturgy, conjuring a soundscape where despair and transcendence entwine, and the voice of these doomed heroes resounds as a ritual echoing through eternity.
